Five years since I last saw the Cult in action and five years older. No longer
an irresponsible Art student, but a responsible Art teacher and thank heaven my
memory of this concert is better than that of the Livingston gig five years
previous. I must admit I'm not a fan of the '94 album 'the Cult' but as it had
been a long time since the band had been in my neck of the woods, I couldn't
miss the opportunity to catch them this time around. I had even heard rumours
that the set list was to be mainly new material but that wasn't going to deter
me. I was working for Virgin records at the time so the evening was made all the
sweeter by being put on the guest list by the ticket agents who operated a
concession in the branch in which I worked. The opener was Nirvana. Boy
was I relieved to find that the rumours about the set list weren't true. The
Witch, Zap City, Love Removal Machine, Fire Woman, they
were all here as were a few tracks from the new album but these sounded really
fresh in a live setting. The Barrowlands is one of these venues that when the
audience start to jump and move, you have to just to stay on your feet and alive!
The Cult gig was like that from start to finish except for the breather interludes
such as Edie (Ciao Baby). The condensation was running down the walls by the
end. A great night. Seven years on and the Cult are coming back to Glasgow to play
at the Gig on the Green in the summer. I'm now a responsible father but if I can
get a baby sitter, I'll be there!
