SDSU Open Air Theatre, San Diego, California
This concert was a bonus, since they had already come earlier in January. I had
heard earlier Ian and Billy on the radio saying how much they enjoyed playing
in San Diego and how the concerts always went well here. It was pretty hot out,
and the opening band seemed to take a long time. After the opening band left,
we waited for the Cult. And waited, and waited, and waited. Too long. It seemed
almost an hour. I don't know exactly. People were getting a bit angry. finally
they came out. Me and my friends were in for a shock. Billy had cut his hair
short, and so had Ian. We were heartbroken. I know it sounds silly, but to us
Ian's hair was what made part of the stigma of the Cult. The music is still of
course the best, but something seemed to be missing that night. The crowd
didn't seem into it like the other San Diego concerts I'd been to. I remember
Ian saying, and I'm paraphrasing here, "The Cult is going to go away for a long
time now, you won't be seeing us for a long time". How true he was. But we are
all incredibly happy to see them back together now.
