Stadium Arena, Grand Rapids, Michigan
Opened with New York City - which totally rocked. Played
Edie (Ciao Baby) (Ian dedicated this to Andrew Wood who died
the day before or something, singer from Mother Love Bone), Sun
King, American Horse, Automatic Blues, Wild
Flower, Peace Dog, Lil' Devil, She Sells
Sanctuary, Sweet Soul Sister, Fire Woman and
Love Removal Machine.
Jamie started the keyboard intro to Sweet Soul Sister and it was so loud it
made a fire engine seem pleasing - piercing notes from the keyboard that not
only hurt beyond pain but seemed a bit over the top. Thankfully Billy's riff
kicked in and the keyboard went away. Sweet Soul Sister had just been released as a video
single and the crowd picked up on it and it was one of the better received
songs of the night - Fire Woman was probably the biggest crowd pleaser since
it was The Hit. Sun King had the huge Sonic Temple logo lower and turn and
move out towards the stadium - it was a bit over the top and very Spinal Tap
yet it was very cool to see this huge black fabric with the silver The Cult
Sonic Temple and the Maltese Cross logo for the record stare you down. The
other moment I recall with distinct clarity is Ian bouncing out on stage
with his black skull hat and black shirt and pants (I think there was
something to do with the US flag in there somewhere, perhaps a bandana) and
just spitting everywhere during New York City and seeming to feel it was
funny, which it was.
