Pine Knob, Clarkston, Michigan
Opened for Metallica
If you read RIP magazine, they interviewed Asters and he talked
about this show. During American Horse, which Ian dedicated
to Rolling Stone Brian Jones, who died July 3rd, 1969, some
Metallica fan had a sign that said 'The Cult Suck - Go Fire
Yourselves' or something like that. It was way to my left and in
the 20th row or something. Ian jumped down into the crowd and
started climbing back - over the chairs - people were scattering
like a mad-brained bear was coming after them. Ian got to the guy,
grabbed the sign, put it in his mouth, and climbed back over the
chairs to the stage, got up on stage and started screaming fuck
this and fuck that - he was so hoarse you could hardly understand
him. They opened with Sun King with a five minute intro with
Jamie and Matt POUNDING away and finally Billy came out and walked
over to the Marshalls that extended out from the stage like a
fucking pier (ala Love Removal Machine video) and just stood
in front of them and let his Les Paul Custom SCREAM with feedback.
Somehow they broke into the song and Ian came out and just walked
up to the mic. New York City was hot, as well as Automatic
Blues. Played above mentioned songs as well as Fire
Woman and the three singles from Electric. They may have
played more from Sonic Temple but I don't recall.
There were probably 50 Cult fans there, and I'm being a bit
generous. We drove from Lansing and left after Metallica played a
few songs.
