Scream, Los Angeles, California
This weekend that Scream team sure had several reasons to gloat. On Sunday
night a top-secret Cult show caused a mob scene outside the Park Plaza. Not
only because of the unannounced gig, but some yuckster called up and said
that when singer Ian Astbury arrived there would be a bomb in his bag. Ha!
He doesn't even carry a bag!

"This show is just for fun," announced Ian Astbury to the 1,000 fans
fortunate enough to get in tonight. And maybe it was a more relaxed, casual
event than the preceding weekend of high-powered arena gigs, but that didn't
stop the Cultists from giving it all they had, as two twisted microphone
stands, smashed cymbals, broken drums, strewn clothes and a drainded but
euphoric crowd attested when it was all over. Adding "Kid Chaos" (Zodiac
Mindwarp) on bass and moving regular bassist Jaime over to rhythm guitar to
complement Billy Duffy's already prolific leads managed to tighten up a band
that already has very few loose ends, resulting in a show that was a lesson
in the AC/DC-inspired school of wickedly exquisite, breathlessly serious
rock & roll. With never a second's letdown in the tension and excitement, we
were treated to a myriad of Cult songs from the days of Souther Death Cult
up to now- they may have economized the name over the years, but certainly
not their music, and the number of covers (mostly during the three encores)
included the best version this writer has ever heard of Iggy Pop's "Now I
Wanna Be Your Dog." Though they couldn't bring their light show, stage sets
and props, there was no loss of heart, soul or desire here. This was the "E"
ticket of the year.
