Opening Band: Guns N' Roses

This was the good one. The opening band was Guns n' Roses and nobody showed up to the concert! There was about 3000 people there so they moved the stage very close to the seats on one end of the stadium. I was on the floor and had a very close up view of the concert. Guns N' Roses was the usual warm up band; poor sound and unknown. I only remember that they did a good version of Knockin On Heaven's Door. They might have done some of their later hits but I don't remember. I was there for the Cult.

Amazing show. As soon as it started, you knew something was odd. They were obviously drunk on stage, stumbling around and acting crazy. At the end of the show, we started to rush the stage. I remember one guy grabbing the bass guitar and playing it, with the bassist edging him on. People were pouring onto the stage and singing with Ian and Billy and having a great time. Then Ian started to punch a bouncer. The rest of the bouncers jumped up on stage and started wrestling with him. They began to haul people off the stage and started battling with the rest of the band. The crowd didn't like this and started to throw chairs and barracades. Suddenly, the lights came on and security people poured out everywhere and chased us all outside. We wound up outside the stadium with cops around and everybody very tense but it just sort of fizzled out. Ian spent the night in jail for that and were banned from Vancouver for a while.

I attended this concert and I can honestly say that it is in my top 2 concerts after going to 181 concerts so far in my life. Guns 'N Roses were unknowns who definitely had a bad sound. It sounded like they got to use 5% of the p.a. - other than that they rocked out and looked promising. The Cult started off with Ian Astbury saying that the band had been "RIPPED OFF" 50 thousand dollars. Ian then pointed to the red shirt security guards in the front row and said it could have been one of them. This of course got Ian issuing a challenge to the crowd and this got the crowd riled up. The band rocked very very tight and heavy because Jamie Stewart was on rhythm guitar with Billy (all the way from Manchester) Duffy on leads and a great bass player Kid Chaos who made the Cult a better 'live' band. As the night went on Ian kept bringing up the security guards stole our cash challenge to the crowd and Ian genuinely seemed pissed about it. Most of the concert was extreme and intense chaos on the verge of a riot. Ian did things like sing every second word in a song. Roll around on the stage amongst 25 - 30 people running and jumping around above him and he was rolling up in the mic cord and screaming through it all. How did this all come about you ask? Well . . . a friend of mine was the first person to jump on stage and when he did a BIG security guard ran out from the side of the stage and blind-sided tackled my friend to the stage floor. Ian who was on the other side of the stage saw this and he ran across the stage and tackled the BIG security guard off of my friend and lets just say this REALLY got the crowd in a frenzy - it was major chaos and my goose bumps were going on for about 45 mins. I was completely blown away by the Cult's ability to rock out so tight and heavy through all of this intensity. I was blown away by Ian's ability to sing like he did and create havoc and chaos and bring the crowd to a state of frenzy without complete overdoing it and actually causing a full out riot. Absolutely amazing show. I do not agree with the posted song list because I remember the Cult playing the song Bone Bag. I've seen the cult 5 times and they still haven't topped this show yet. This show is LEGENDARY in Vancouver and will be remembered . . . FOREVER.
