Ballroom, Hull, England
I was there right at the beginning. And I do mean at the beginning. The very first Cult gig at
the Hull Ballroom, 8th May 1984.
The gig was produced by the Hull University and I was Head of ENTS Finance. I have to admit to
not knowing the band before my colleague, Jo Jackson (not the singer) suggested hiring them. We
decided to put on the gig in town at the ballroom to attract more of an audience. It was a bit
of a dive, we even had to build the stage!! As it was, an intimate but enthusiastic crowd
attended (probably only 150ish?).
Watching the sound check, I realised we’d hit on something special. Their sound was amazing. I
couldn’t be moved from either the sound check or the concert. I’ve been a background fan ever
since and have bought a few CD’s along the way.
Apart from the excellent music, my other overwhelming memory of the night was drinking with the
tour manager and one of the band (can’t remember which) after the show, consuming rather too much
Southern Comfort. Also seem to remember seeing another band member naked as he walked through the
dressing room (again can’t remember which one)
Altogether an amazing night – I’m looking forward to the Academy to see if they can still pull
it off. Reading some of the recent blogs, I’ve no doubt they can
See you on the 18th.
