I saw The Cult for the first time on EXIT Festival, Novi Sad, Serbia, and I
it was fantastic! Maybe they weren't especially inspired (Ian), but that was
GREAT show! The Cult has been one of my favorite bands of all times since '87.
while I was in high school and I was dreaming about listen to them alive. It
took 19 years to my dreams came true, but it worthed! I'm glad that rhythm
guitar player has his origins in Serbia (or he is Serbian) and I hope that
they will come again! At the end of 80's some music journalist called The
Cult "The Greatest Serbian rock band" because of their popularity here and he
was damn right!

EXIT festival is occurring for 6th time in the city of Novi Sad, about an
one hour by car far from the Belgrade, the capital of the Serbia. Every
year EXIT with it's 20 stages in 4 days, gathers around 150.000 young people
from whole Europe (but mainly from Eastern Europe of course). The headliners
for the opening night were Cardigans, then Franz Ferdinand and finally THE
CULT. The Cult was my main reason to visit the festival and I had to
struggle, along with my accompaniers, during the Franz Ferdinand perform, in
the first lines in order to preserve myself a good position for the The
Cult :) The main stage was full for the FF but when they finished their
great show we had to wait a half an hour to stage be ready for The Cult. The
young fans of FF left the first lines which were immediately occupied by a
little bit older crew. Surprisingly there were also some very young Cult
fans, maybe in their 20's! I estimate that there were around 15.000 ppl in
the audience. Thanks to this incredibly lovely site of yours I had a
complete idea of what their show would be like and what can I expect. I even
refresh my memory, regarding the song lyrics, that day earlier before I was
suppose to leave from Belgrade to Novi Sad and I removed the dust from my
old The Cult vinyl, turned the music loud and sang like crazy teenager in my
room all songs from the setlist they are playing on their tour. They have
never performed here in Serbia despite they were VERY big here back in the
1990's. While waiting for the guys to appear one can literary felt the
electricity through the mass. And finally, they started with the Lil' devil.
What an explosion! Everybody was singing and dancing. 15.000 ppl were
jumping like one! Ian was dancing in his incredibly sexy style but with a
few pound's extra, hehe. Somehow he was pissed at the mic stand and broke
it, a roadie brought another one soon. He was also mad at stage monitors and
in one moment he kicked them down from the stage commenting like that nobody
needs that back sound fucking shit :) Do I have to mention how technicians
were funny trying to repair the things while Ian was acting like nothing
happened! Some friends were standing in the middle of the crowd and later
they were complaining how they couldn't make any single picture because the
ppl had their hands in the air all the time! The unplugged version of The
Edie was a real jewel and when at the end of the song Ian and Billy honored
each other with fist to fist salute it was really touching. Fire woman fired
the audience. Yes, Ian also have broke his ring tambourine in two pieces and
than throw it to the mad audience. I must say that Ian's vocal is still
SOOOO powerful and unique! Billy was communicating with the crowd nicely.
The Ian said that guy who is playing the guitar is of an Serbian origin and
that his name is Mike Dimkic. Nice :) They finished their performance with
the Wild flower. When The Cult left the scene the audience was ecstatic so
they called them back with screams and hands clapping almost for 10 minutes.
They came back and with the cherry on the top - She Sells Sanctuary! All in
all - AWSOME!!!

The Cult has always been our favorite band and we have never thought
that we will see them alive.Exit festival was unexpectedly opportunity to
finaly see those gays alive.First we had to wait more then 5 hours,because
before the cult FF and Cardigans were playing.Finaly,about 00:30 they
came out on stage and the real haos started.They started with lil' devil
and audience got creazy.Everybody's were screaming and singing like
one.Song by song,Sweet soul sister,then Witch made us without breath.When
Rain came we all were weat but from sweat,and the Fire women burned us
alive.Situacion culminated with Rise,that song in our country is very
popular.Spiritwalker,Love removal machine,Saint,Peace dog,Wonderland...and
on encore they came with legendary song 'she sells sanctuary'.
We were in the second line right infront of stage so we had good view of
situacion on stage.Ian was singing like crazy,but he was very angry.Later
we found out that he was angry because the concert wasn't recorded by
cameras.He broke stand for microphone and stage monitor also,and people
yell to him to break everything on stage.After using he throuw his
tambourine in audience,and every instrument he was using also.Billy was in
very good mood,sound of his gitar blow up our minds.In one moment his
gitar was broken,but they repir her quick.Big commendation for Mike
Dimkich,very good gitarist and Serbian also!!!
At the end what more can we say then simply:'THIS CONCERT WAS THE BEST
CONCERT IN OUR FUCKING LIVES'.
We have information that they will play in Serbia again, in June, on Road
Fest in Zrenjanin. So, people came to join us on their concert again!!!
