Detroit, Michigan, Emerald Theater

So last night I saw The Cult at the Emerald in Mount Clemens. Wow! Let me just say it was the single most absolute greatest live rock show I've seen! I mean, first of all, I didn't expect so many people. It was a sold out show man. Then, the Cult rocked so hard with an 18+ song set, playing all of their hits plus a few rarities!! No opening band, and two very short breaks. They actually played my all time favorite song: Brother Wolf; Sister Moon. It was a very loud show; and I'm still suffering from hearing loss. And the fucking crowd was the wildest bunch of people ever. I mean crowd surfing and moshing and people on the stage. The police came to take away an escpecially rowdy guy, and Ian (the singer) ran up and starting screaming right at the plice. He said "MAKE SURE THAT GUY DOES NOT GET THROWN OUTTA HERE! HE'S THE ONLY MOTHER FUCKER THAT KNOWS WHAT A ROCK SHOW IS!: I mean, the band was very wild. It was all a very good time.

It was incredible to be front row-center for over half of the show. We stood there until Ian called out the 50 year old ass clown nearby. "And you... what's your fucking problem?" he said. The guy was just standing there showing no emotion. The Witch began and all hell broke out. This big guerrilla moshed up and about 50 of his buddies came with him. We had to retrieve back a little to protect my lovely wife. They were going at it until they end of the show.

All in all, it was a great performance and incredibly loud. However, seemed Billy had some technical difficulties early on, maybe volume control on his amp. He too called out the audience, something about a discotheque and the lameness early on as he has done at previous events. I believe my wife now understands my passion. She made the comment to me that "the show was fucking awesome!"

In closing, two words (maybe more) "Road fucking trip!!!!!" Hopefully, this is the beginning of something monstrous, new music and another tour... and Ian and the boys - Thank You!

The show was great but I do have two bitches about it. First off - Holy shit was it loud! Not 'man, that is crazy loud'.. I mean 'that sounds like shit distorted loud' - that is why Billy kept putting his finger to his ear. I've seen the loudest bands in the smallest venues and this was the loudest. When Billy would lead/solo people were turning away and whincing - hense his comparison of the crowd to an airplane hangar (??) and a discoteque. Yeah, we were lame, cause the f'ing distortion prevented us from hearing the music! The second rant is that the 'hometown' crowd didn't even know who Rob Tyner was during Ian's tribute to the departed MC5 singer. That was too bad cause I think that left a sour taste in Ian's mouth as he was a bit angry from that point on...

Overall it was a good show. The drummer, who wasn't Sorum, was very good.. really good. He HAMMERED the skins and never missed a beat. The bass & rythm guitarists were good, but definitely 'behind the scene'. Ian's vocals weren't 100%, but when a guy has a voice like that he is entitled to an off night (and even on his off nights he can still sing better than 99% of the other vocalists out there today!). And BIlly - damn, Billy - that man still rocks and always will.

Don't get me wrong - I still loved it and will see them next time around!

DETROIT ROCK CITY? I THINK NOT! The Detroit crowd should be absolutely ashamed of itself. What an embarrassment. Ian and Billy spent almost half the show trying to get the audience involved. I’ve seen The Cult six times and I know Ian likes to get on the crowd about getting into the music, but this crowd was pathetic. Yes, I understand were a little older with a lot more responsibility, but for god sakes this was an f’ing rock show. Get your hands out of your pockets and put your metal forks in the air. (Especially the people standing around the bar with their thumbs up their ass!) I would venture to guess that from this piss poor crowd interaction that will be the last time The Cult will ever be coming back to Detroit. Be ashamed, very ashamed! By the way, the show f’ing rocked. The old adage if it’s too loud, you’re too old still applies, quit complaining.

Forever A Cult Fan, Regardless,

Dan
