It’s been a week since the Cult show in Montreal opening for Aerosmith, so I’ve had some time to digest it. Here are my observations:

Having seen them twice earlier this year at Metropolis and Musiqueplus (front row!), this was the performance I enjoyed the least. Which is not to say it was bad, but if Metropolis and Musiqueplus were 10 on 10, this was only 8.

The band performed great, Ian was very high energy and made great use of what limited space he was allowed on Aerosmith’s big stage. Billy was great too and seemed more into the show than the 2 previous Montreal gigs. Matt was wild as usual, I love the way he drums. The best Cult line-up for me was Astbury, Duffy, Stewart and Sorum. Mike and Billy were solid too.

The crowd was respectful but not fully into it. Things picked up near the end with “the hits”, but it was definitely an Aerosmith crowd. Ian through 2 tambourines into the crowd, one during Rise and one at the end of Love Removal Machine. At the end, Ian and Billy definitely seemed happy with the performance. So was I quite honestly, although I must say the sound was pitiful. When you pay such a high price for a ticket, is it too much to ask for good sound?

On the upside, I can’t believe that this year alone, I’ve seen this band 3 times! Each show has been a unique and positive experience.
