It's been 16 years since the last time the Cult played in Japan.
Their appearance was as a part of this mega-festival, filled mostly with
kids in current trendy band tees.
Previous act was a popular Japanese rap rockers and as soon as their set's
done, 'standing' section replaced the crowd and we were there, the devoted
Cult fans, types varying from ageing hipsters, goth rockers (in broad
summer daylight) to younger kids, some trying out the unfamiliar (used my
eaves-dropping skill to find this out). I can say devoted, for pre-show
air was tense and heated, and the band must have felt that too, it was by
all means a great show, the chemistry was there. Sounded very tight, from
the beginning to the end, solid and like full-throttle motor-buzz, and they
sounded very sexy as well, like life-force sexy, and this quality made them
stand out from the other act, since many bands seemed to follow the current
stereotypes and just be power-driven.
Some MCs in Japanese and stage diving by Ian (one of which he obviously
landed on some light-weight people he went down as if he was drowning...),
crowd responded with passion and Ian repeated "Tokyo, No.1!!" and when he
asked us who is the No.1, we agreed with him that the Cult is, not Manson
nor Slipknot. Too bad it was a short set, for they were 5th to appear and 4
more to come.
By the way, some of those younger kids were totally dumb-struck after the
show, mumbling to each other going "they rock...it was really cool....".
Now, one more Japanese word for Ian to remember:
kakko-ii!!!( means you guys are super cool )!!
To the Cult guys; now that you know we love you so very much, please come
back again, this time for full-set shows !! We certainly want MORE!!!!
