The Cult - Concrete Street Amphitheater, Jul 26/2001
Corpus Christi, Texas, Concrete Street Amphitheater
Opening Band: Flying Tigers
Being that my grandparents have a condo in Corpus and that a friend as an apartment very close to where The Cult played I knew it would be an excellent opportunity to see an excellent band..even if it seemed an unlikely place. Interestingly, this date and city was added rather quickly and did not even appear on the schedule. The night already got off to a great start when my friend's neighbors kindly gave us free tickets, which we were otherwise going to pay for. The tickets were given to them free and since they were not going because they had never heard of The Cult(?!?), they felt it was pointless to let them go to waste. So from there we were on are way. Once we got to the venue, not to sound snobish or anything, but while in line I kind of get the feeling that many people there were not really into the Cult but just there to see a concert. For example I even heard the people in front of us talk about some country & western concert..now everyone has a right to like what they want..it just seemed unusual to hear something like that at a Cult show. Well, south Texas is perhaps the most conservative area in the state of Texas..if not the United States.. so I suppose I was expecting it. It's just the kind of place that is unwilling to accept change. Which is a shame because Corpus does have a nice beach to offer..but that's about it. The opening act, Flying Tigers, was very good and I would not be surprised if they do hit it big. Before the show, I spoke to the lead singer and was impressed with how friendly and down to earth they were. Okay, show time..The Cult was sensational. They really put on a top-notch show and the music come out both beautifully and powerfully..I was entranced and totally blown over. Much to me dissappointment(and I'm sure to Ian and the rest of the band) was the lackluster response from the audience. I know it was not the band..their performance was amazing..but the audience. They just did not know how to let loose. The band was right on target and the music was explosive..but the crowd, for the most part, was rather stiff. I've gone to concerts were I almost fainted from dyhydration, like Siouxsie in Austin a while back. At this particular show I remember being the only person in my area pogo-ing (not a good thing). Most people just stood there. I don't care, I still enjoyed myself. I guess the Cult's legendary status slipped by some in attendance. I remember Ian saying that they "only play for the hardcore" and something about Texas being a country in itself. After the show, I stuck around and tried to speak to Ian..but to no avil. I spoke to the singer from Flying Tigers again and to a friendly woman who was with the band who told me that my best bet to met The Cult was to wait around the stage. I remember discussing the show with her and remember her saying that the band usually feeds off the audience and despite the tameness of the show they were in good spirits that night(I'm paraphrasing). While hoping to get a chance to thank the band for the show, the security rudely told me and a few others that they were not coming out. I don't blame them for wanting to get out of dodge, but very grateful for the incrediable show they put on that night

Corpus Christi is the show that replaced San Antonio, and the venue is a complete dump! The dressing room is miles away from the stage, the actual open air arena is just a huge concrete area and right next to it is a sewage works...pools of shit festering right next to the stage. Nice!! The heat is unbearable and we are still working without a monitor engineer, so the mood is not exactly Disney Club! Mike goes off to see the aircraft carrier that’s moored in the harbour, Ian is nowhere to be seen, Matt’s talking to the new support band, The Flying Tigers, and Billy’s on the bus, resting up. I don’t really know what to do with myself, so I amble about from stage to dressing room to bus in the sweltering heat, until its time to warm up, and then its stage time. What a fucking nightmare!! Last nights show was a club gig, so having no monitors wasn’t too much of a problem. Tonights show is open air, in a place that holds thousands of people, with a huge stage. Tonight, having no monitors IS a problem!! It’s a bad show, one of only a handful that we’ve had, and we all hold on tight, pound our way through, and get out of town as quickly as possible. The less said about Corpus Christi, the better.
