THE CULT ROCKED OUT! The setlist was the same as the Myrtle Beach show. Ran 85 min walk-on to final walk off. The new material fits in with the older songs just fine. I liked the show. Just as great as the last time they played here in 1999 at the Chili Pepper. The sound mix was real good overall, could here all instruments good, drums a tinge louder where we were. Ian's vocals could have been up a little more too, but overall sounded better than most outdoor shows do. I hope somebody recorded the show.
But Ian was not happy with the crowd because we seemed to him to be too laid back and not all excited or something? The audience was definitely into the show. But maybe we were reserved because we had to wait for so long. The CULT did not go on until ~ 9:15 PM. So we were subjected to 2 opening bands that nobody could give a rat's ass about. The first band "?" unknown because we were still outside waiting to get tickets to get in, was probably some local cover band. Who needed to hear that? The next band was LENNON. basically some decent looking chick named Lennon with a band not so unique. After she was done, we got to wait for 1 hour before the Cult finally came on. So that did not get the crowd at all pumped up. Plus we were all looking at the sky a lot, watching the constantly moving-in ominous black clouds & lightning. So the people were not that happy when they had to wait for so long when it looked like it would rain at any minute. AND OF COURSE IT DID! At about ~ 1 hour into the show, it started sprinkling, not too bad, with 2 songs left before the encore. But when they left the stage before the encore, it started raining more. Never really poured down real heavy like it does a lot down here so I would say that most of the people still there did not leave, but some did. So had the Cult started 1/2 hour sooner, which they could have, then the show would have been over before it started raining!
Don't know what affect the cancellation of the other 2 originally scheduled opening bands had to do with the overall atmosphere, but they might have gotten the crowd pumped up more? Hard to say. I've seen those bands before too, and they don't do much for me either. One point in the show, Ian even mentioned Marilyn Manson, who just happens to have been a local bar band down here many years ago before becoming famous (infamous?) and that failed to get much of a rise out of the crowd. But there was some decent looking women at the show. Including one free spirit in the 2nd row, who was on somebody's shoulder, with her top off, showing off her store-bought chest, most of the show. Ian never complained about that!
By the way, if they sold 1000 tix, they were lucky. I don't know if it was lack of proper promotion or what? The place was no where near capacity, the side sections had a lot of empty seats.
No.13 (hey Isn't that a song?) my thirteenth Cult show and what a show it was! The band was focused and were very tight. I must say I have been surprised by the many set list complaints, and yes it was the same set list as the rest of the tour. I personally would have preferred to hear the new record straight through (I consider it a one of the best CULT records to date) but what the heck right, at least they made a new record. How can you complain: Peace Dog has not been played on every tour nor has Nirvana? Anyway it was a great show, Ian took a few moments to get going as usual and Billy was fussing at his sound guy as usual. The vocals were dead on, during Take The Power. I thought Ian's voice my give him some trouble but he came back strong and actually sounded better than I have heard in a long time. Breathe probably came off the best. War and The Witch also were especially rockin. It's funny to see the band give Fire Woman such a good run through. I believe in past tours that song has been played with less that total enthusiasm. Now the band looks back at how special it was to have a hit record and the Sonic Temple cuts get a little better every tour. (I never thought I would say that.)
In the front row some dude popped of his prosthetic leg and stared waving in the air! It eventually got tossed on stage and Ian grabbed it and tried to step on the rhythm guitarist's effects peddle with the fake foot!! What a trip. It was great to see the lads giving it their all and back where they belong, out of the clubs! The reunion tour was great but THE CULT needs at least a couple of thousand fans to really get them going and I don't blame them. I was especially glad to see they still bring out the ladies and hats off to the local authorities for letting that extremely beautiful girl stay topless the whole show although Ian and Billy pretty much ignored her, maybe there were some girl friends and wives watching from stage left? Anyway killer show one of my top five favorite Cult shows. It makes you wonder what the band would have been like sobered up, back in the day. I will say this I hope Ian is careful about drop kicking the tambourine into the crowd, a line drive in the face could equal a law suit in this day and age! Maybe next tour we will get The River or Bone Bag but I doubt it.
Talk about a band turning a quiet crowd into fist-pumping maniacs! The Cult rocked Friday night. The crowd (only about 1,000) was unusually quiet (yes, Ian, it WAS hard to believe we were in Florida) I think it was the impending rain or the shock that the Cult can still rock as hard as they do. Ian, you & the boys DID rock us, not to worry. Guitar solos were kickin', music was LOUD, and the new stuff mixed in nicely with the old. By the time they played Fire Woman, the crowd was fully awake and yelling at the top of their lungs. Oh, and the bare-breasted hottie in the front row made for nice eye candy.
Maybe next tour the band could throw some different tunes in the set list (Coming Down and Spiritwalker come to mind) but all in all, another GREAT SHOW!
Three friends of mine flew down from New York and Boston to hang out on South Beach for the weekend, and to mix in the Cult concert Friday night at the Pompano Beach Amphitheatre. Having seen the Cult numerous times in the past (pretty sure this concert puts me into double digits if you count 1 Holy Barbarians show), having seen them at their worst (early 1992 at the LA Forum during a lame duck Ceremony Show with Lenny Kravitz) and at their best (mid - 1992 while attending UNLV in Las Vegas) I also saw them twice during the Cult Rising tour in '99, in SF and in Houston. Not really knowing what to expect this time out, we set off for the show. My buds have little familiarity with Beyond, so they were into wanting to hear She Sells Sanctuary, Rain and the other classics... I on the other hand didn't care, they could have kicked the show off with Gone and I would have jumped for joy...
Here nor there, we arrived late for the show, figuring they had to get through two back up bands before the Cult got on. Taking our time, we had just hit the john when the opening rif to Rise was bellowing through the air... We of course booked it out of the restrooms and ran upstairs to see Ian and crew blasting through Rise. The sound was great, but we were a bit taken back by how few people were actually there (I'd say less than 1,500), so walking up to the front (maybe 10 rows back) was easy. Let me also confirm the beautiful topless woman with great hair and a top-of-the-shelf dow chemical rack was definitely present. From there, the Cult jumped into In The Clouds for non-Cult fans this was a rather obscure tune... After that, it was one hit after the other, Lil' Devil, Edie (Ciao Baby), Rain, She Sells Sanctuary, Wild Flower, the surprise pull for the night for us was Peace Dog, surprising left outs were Nico and American Gothic. I think American Gothic is one of the best songs the Cult have out out since Electric. What was also so great was Ian's willingness to actually sing the songs, I'd seen them in the past when Ian would "mail it in" during Lil' Devil and Fire Woman. Not this time! In addition the band played with a renewed sense of vigor which had been missing from their shows before the first breakup, you can tell the band is really into playing the stuff from the new album, Billy and Matt in particular were worthy of much Kudos.
Mid way through the show, lightning was flashing
pretty brightly in the sky, and Ian made a comment
about the lightning being beautiful before they
launched into Rain, after awhile it began to pour,
but it felt great, and the show went on! After a
great encore, we left the show all saying how great it
really was, how much better the band performed than
the last time we all saw them as a group about 6 years
ago in Tucson Arizona (about a month before the first
breakup), even one of the guys who was completely
unfamiliar with the Cult really got into the show...
All in all I'd give them an 8.5!
