Opening bands: Bif Naked, New American Shame

Ten years after my first (disappointing) Cult concert, I was to experience the best concert of my life. The Cult arrived on a dark stage with "Duel of the Fates" playing. (music from Star Wars Ep.1 lightsaber duel) They then broke into Lil' Devil and played through most of their greatest hits. (High Octane album) The crowd was starved for all they could get. Sensing this, Ian responded by summoning his shamen energy and broke down the walls between crowd and artist. I was surprised that so many younger people were able to sing along with all the older hits. A true testimony to the appeal of the music. I believe that Ian has come to realize the love the fans have for the Cult's work. Let's hope that they can cut a new recording and not succumb to the lifestyle of fame.

Amazing show last night here in Myrtle Beach. Only one problem though - a friend of mine asked The Cult's lighting engineer for a set list and the man become extremely hostile and spat in my friends face. Having worked in the music business for over ten years now, I know that most bands would not want to be represented by someone who behaves like that. Seems to me that someone's forgotten that the fans are the reason that the Cult is out touring right now... Again, a great show with an unfortunately sour last note.

I can't say much that hasn't already been said. The setlist was the same and the show was amazing. I was also at the Chicago show which was great but this one was even better. Near the end of Sweet Soul Sister, they just started jamming and Ian improvised some lyrics about South Carolina. Then during The Phoenix, Martyn did a bass solo that was really cool. The crowd was incredibly excited, screaming our heads off and dancing. Thankfully there was very little pushing and no stage diving. Not that I really mind stage diving but it was nice being able to enjoy the show without having to worry about a kick in the head! Ian and Billy really seemed to enjoy the crowd and they each repeatedly came down to the very edge of the stage which got everyone even more excited. Ian reached out and shook a lot of hands several times, including mine. I wasn't able to catch Ian's tambourine but I did manage to snag a bra he threw back into the crowd. Size 40D! Wow! It later ended up on another girl's head! The highlights of the night for me were In The Clouds, The Witch and The Phoenix. When I met my wife 4.5 years ago she had never heard of the Cult (she likes Sting) but she said it was the best show she's ever been to and I have to agree!

Since THE CULT didn't plan on coming to Florida, I did the next best thing and drove my happy ass 6 1/2 to Mrtyle Beach. I got to the show at about 6:30pm, just in time to change and check out what was going outside behind the venue. In the first 20 minutes of arriving I got my picture taken with Ian Astbury himself! I met a fellow CULT fan from Florida in the parking lot minutes before the encounter with Ian. I gave Ian some pictures I had taken of him at one of the HOLY BARBARIANS shows in Florida. He seemed very excited because a few of the pictures had his son Dusty in them. I was very happy to give him the pictures and glad that he was happy to receive them. The fellow CULT fan I meet was also shocked that we got our pictures taken with Ian so quickly and even before the show. We both (David and I) deceided to hang out and check out the venue, since this was both of our first times at The House of Blues in South Carolina. The Opening Band New American Shame was pretty damn impressive. It was very apparent that A/C D/C is there major influence, down the the guitarist head shaken. We managed to get to about the third row in front of the stage. We both couldn't believe that we were about to witness THE CULT live! The last time either one of us saw THE CULT live was 7 1/2 years ago. I had planned on seeing them back in 1995 in Florida, but as everyone knows, they broke up. Too much pressure to wait, we were standing on edge waiting and waiting as the lights went down and the in house annoucer started with the rules. It was just about that time. All the members came out on stage except for Ian. Matt stood behind his drum set with the biggest grin as the crowd screammed for them to KICK MAJOR ASS! Ian jumped out on stage picked up his tamborine and greeted the crowd, Lil' Devil was the starter. The set list was the same as the other shows. The crowd was so into it, jumping up and down screaming and yelling. The average age of the crowd had to have been at least 27-30. I felt like I was at a high school reunioun. Ian was very happy to be there. His hair had grown back to the commanding length that it use to be. His preformance on stage reminded me of Jim Morrison, very GOD like. During one of the last songs in the set Ian throw up his tamborine and it landed on Matts drum set. Matt seemed kinda pissed and threw the tamborine on to the ground smashing it into bits! The both laughed it off! The whole concert was incredible! Every song, not just one, was the absolute best! After the show I attempted to get one of the set lists. The stage guys seemed to focus there attention on any female that would walk and talk in front of them. I didn't score the set list but I did get a piece of the broken tamborine that Matt smashed! They started asking everyone to leave so we managed to get back to the entrance of the club. I spoke with Jimmy the lead gataurist of New American Shame. Real nice guy, he had one back stage pass left for one lucky lady. I tired to help him pick the right one! There was one women, and let me tell you OUCH! She had just purchased the baby doll CULT shirt and she look YUMMY! I tired to convience him to give it to her, but she had a man with her. :( Too bad. Oh well, now we had to get to the back of the club and wait for the guys to come out. Eventually they all did. I got my pictures taken with all of the other band mates. What an adventure and Atlanta was on my things to do for the next day! NO sleep and a 6 to 7 hour drive ahead of me and I am on PURE CULT ADRENILINE HIGH! HOTLANTA HER WE COME!

Well I finally got to see the cult live and I will give you good points and bad, it was a packed house at the House Of Blues in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina and I was in the front row, The Cult sounded incredible Ian was on it, but Billy lacked any charisma or personality, he was just going through the motions, at one point Ian threw his tamborine in the air and it landed in Matt's drum section, Matt got pissed off and threw it at the floor full force, which it bounced and hit me straight in the forehead and then hit the person next to me, very uncool!!! and immature, I was looking for the tamborine desperatly to beam the hell at the little boy Matt Sorum who would ruin my lifelong goal to see The Cult, just so you know I'm not a violent person, but the tamborine was no where around, and I left early, thanks Matt for almost ruining the whole show.

Small venue made for a superb show. Standing room only!! Ian mentioned (several times) the recording of a new album.

Just happened to be in the town for the show. IT was wonderful! Have loved them since the early 80's and it was great to see them again!

It was my first Cult show in about 5 years. I had never seen them in a venue that small before. At the start of the song The Witch, which I had never seen live before, Ian threw his tambourine at Matt Sorum. In retaliation Matt stood up on his drum base and threw it back at him. It hit the floor and all the jangles flew off. Billy grabbed Ian and got the song back on track. Great show. Drove to Atlanta the next day for the show at the Tabernacle. Awesome!
