Coca-Cola Roxy Theatre, Atlanta, Georgia
The Cult came back into town in support of their new album The Cult.
With amps cranked to the maximum, Ian and Billy came out roaring into Nirvana as
the sold out Roxy crowd wailed and charged the stage. The band tore through all
the songs that are included on the Pure Cult CD, with some exceptions. They
played four songs off the new album including Coming Down, Star,
Black Sun, and
Be Free. Ian, dressed in a red "X-Girl" t-shirt, black jeans, and a Ford
mechanics jacket, explained to the audience that everything was going fantastic
for the band and that during the last recording session they laid down
twenty-one or twenty-two tracks. The remaining tracks would be released as an
album in about seven or eight months (November 95). The resurrected Cult then
began to test out some of the new material as they broke into In The Clouds.
Ian, at one point, made it clear his dislike with the newer breed of bands as he
chastised acts such as Green Day, and The Offspring, though he did thank the
local "alternative" station that has supported the band. He then told the
Atlanta audience he felt a little strange coming here because the last time he
had been here his father had died.
One thing the crowd at the Roxy did not get to see much of was Ian's
trademark spinning and jumping around on stage. Ian's explanation for this was
that, in an effort to keep himself in shape, he had forgotten his running shoes
and ran on the hotel's treadmill barefoot. This left him with numerous blisters
on his feet, but it still did not seem to stop him. At one point, he used a
full Heinekin can as a soccer ball and sizing up the speakers as a goal ripped a
shot into a speaker past bassist Craig Adams. Ian's love for soccer induced him
to change into his favorite club team's jersey, Glasgow Rangers. Ian even
pulled one young member of the audience onto the stage who was wearing a soccer
shirt. Ian made him take it off and analyzing it for a few seconds decided it
was crap, spat on it and threw it back into the audience. All in all the show
was fantastic. Ian's voice roared and Duffy's guitar absolutely rocked the
Atlanta night. Ian said he would see everyone soon and that they were off to
Brazil and Argentina. This fan was to see them in Nashville on April 5, but the
tour was canceled and The Cult was no more.
