The dress rehearsal for arguably the biggest gig of the Cult's career was staged in one of
the capital's better clubs, just off the path of the annual Notting Hill Carnival.
Subterania holds a few hundred and has good acoustics, making it the perfect venue for a
low-key warm-up show.
"This is better than the Marquee," says Ian Astbury, recalling the Cult's last club gig.
"We were a bit too excited that night."
Tonight, the Cult were assured, powerful - a great rock band. And a great British
