Montreal, Quebec, Olympia Theatre
Opening Band: The Cliks
The Montreal show was great with a good crowd and energy from the band. Ian
did very little talking to the crowd, though when he did he was very
appreciative. They kicked off with "Fire Woman", "Rain" and "Electric
Ocean". The whole band was singing strong backing vocals on "Fire Woman" and
all night. "Electric Ocean" was particularly good tonight. Ian called out to
First Nations in the house and mentioned Oka before "Horse Nation" and
"Spiritwalker".
Duffy was on fire as usual. He is really out to play and have fun this tour-
he is just scorching. Billy was in a good mood all night except for a moment
during "I, Assassin" when he decided he had to inflict some physical abuse
on some equipment of his on the floor in order to get it to behave. He was
really singing strong on the backing vocals and spent a lot of time
interacting with the crowd, making faces and pointing.
For the encore someone threw a Montreal Canadians shirt on stage. Ian held
it up to cheers from the crowd. (Montreal is in the NHL playoffs and doing
well). Ian said he spent some time growing up in Canada and he liked the
Canadiens. He then said a much appreciated thank you to Montreal, "You have
a beautiful city, a beautiful culture and a beautiful language."
Ian came out solo for "Holy Mountain" to start the encore then the band
joined for "Nirvana" and "She Sells Sanctuary". A great show with a pretty
loud and rowdy crowd.
Mahlon
My last review was back in 2006 in my home country England at the Bristol
Carling Academy, now living here in Montreal it was fantastic to see the
boys in town.
It’s been said before me but I will use the word again “AWESOME”
I’ve seen The Cult over 20 years change many times but this was as good
as it has ever been!
I bit of a different vibe from the Montreal crowd to a UK concert but still
a great atmosphere, I’ve never heard the response to a rendition of Rain so
loudly cheered!
Front/middle centre was the vantage point with my friend and we ROCKED, I
now apologise to the people around us who’s feet we stood all over and
sweated on but we had a great time.
The music was clean, crisp and as fresh as it has ever been, Illuminated
and my favourite Rise were the highlights for me but it was all excellent
entertainment.
Billy’s solo intro to The Phoenix was a classic!!! guitar held in one hand
vertical high above his head going up the cords, everyone who saw that is
telling there work colleagues today, absolutely brilliant.
Will this be the last time?
I hope not and I don’t think it will, Billy and Ian love the live concert
thing to much to go without it.
When will this buzzing in the ears stop?
Take it easy. Long live The Cult.
