Amsterdam, Holland, Melkweg

Sunday evening in a sunny but unsuspecting Amsterdam and the CULT are about to trash the city...

I'll make it short on our 2h1/2 drive from Brussels and the 45 mn delay in appearing on stage at the MELKWEG (we visibly all know about it - Hang the roadies !). They started with a stunner as they blasted through the stage with "HORSE NATION", first time I heard this song since I first saw them in septembre 1983 at the Paris Bain Douche and that was the DEATH CULT ! On with NIRVANA and other classic tracks. Other surprises were to follow with acoustic versions of STAR and REVOLUTION… and EDIE back on electric guitar (nice one) as well as SUN KING for the first encore (Ian said he thought he'd never be playing that one again).

And after much anticipation and teasing like announcing a new album … and launching straight into WONDERLAND, came a brand new number called "I ASSASSIN". Though Ian pretended to give it only a C, it raised high hopes for a brilliant new album to come !

Actually, that was possibly the best performance I ever saw, and that was about my 15th CULT show. I followed them on the first leg of their september tour of the UK last year with my best mate and quite frankly, yesterday was all in a different scale: BIGGER LOUDER BETTER ! The crowd went beserk and the band really appeared to have great fun.

The fact that a local weekly paper had blamed them for "having nothing new to say" sure was a good bite for the band to pull such a brilliant show !! EXPECT THE BEST FOR THE FUTURE, the CULT IS BACK WITH A VENGEANCE!

In the ‘sold out’ venue Melkweg, Amsterdam we experienced The Cult being back!

Ian’s vocals were as in the old days and Billy’s guitar pose was classical (love it when he’s playing his big white Falcon). It seemed they enjoyed themselves big time on stage.

Besides numbers as Wild Flower, Love Removal Machine, Rain & Revolution (acoustic!), this night it was a surprise making it special. Probably based on a request from someone in the audience they played Sun King (Ian mentioned afterwards “I don’t know how many years ago we played this song for the last time”).

From their new album they played ‘I assassin’. Great song! Can’t wait until it is in stores.

The Cult's back and they kicked ass!!

The Cult show in Amsterdam last sunday was astonishing! Billy was hitting al the notes pretty well and Ian was saving his voice in the first songs but went into full power later on! They even played Sun King and beautifull acoustic versions of star and revolution. They rocked like bloody hell. Hope to see them again this year in Holland!

Kind regards,

Wow, i've seen a lot of live concerts performed by The Cult, since 1986, but this one was the best ever ! Sold out with about a 1.000 heads crowd. Ofcourse The Cult started late, about an hour late, but it was worth the wait. Double worth it. The setlist was different from Amsterdam and Tilburg last year, that's a good thing. They started with Horse Nation, not my personal favorite, but I know it will have pleased a lot of other true Cult fans. After that, the show went on, the crowd got in the mood, and so did The Cult. Ian and Billy talked a lot, were having a great time, and clearly absorbed the crowds energy. Mike was interviewed at one point during the show by Ian, if he knew some Dutch cyclists, Ian asked. Because Mike cycles 100 kilometres per day. Mike had some injures on his arm, caused by falling of his bike...

The accoustic bit was also different from 2006, they played Star and Revolution, together with Mike on guitar. Edie was in the encore in the electric version, another great twist. Mike, John and Chris were in great shape, as was Billy's guitar and Ians voice.

Sun King in the encore was not on the original setlist, it was clearly a bonus from the guys for the energy that the crowd gave during the show. And what a bonus ! Ian said that it was ages ago since they'd played Sun King live. It sounded fantastic,'I think it's one of their classics.

The first four or five lines in the crowd jumped around at songs like Rain, Firewoman, Sun King an She Sells. Ian complemented them several times.

Ian also made some remarks about the soccer tournament currently going on in Holland (European Championship under for teams with players under 21 years). England and Holland will play against eachother in the semi-finals.

Ian also made some remarks about an article in a Dutch newspaper, where the writer stated that The Cult had nothing new to bring. Well, said Ian, our new album will come out in september.

I can't wait !! After the concert I had to sit at a terras on the Leidsche Plein and drink a big glass of beer, just thinking of how lucky I was to be there, and why it was already over... Thanks guys, for a fantastic evening. I've put a small clip of Revolution on TheCult.us Forum.

Holland loves The Cult, The Cult loves Holland. CFFC !

Peace.
