New York, New York, Irving Plaza

Headlining, Opening Band: Bangkok Five, Strays

I went to the show last night at Irving Plaza. Awesome show. They sounded great. They were taping the show to put out an HD DVD (I hope you can play this on a regular DVD player). The DVD will be coming out on 2/27/07.

I've been to a bunch of Cult shows and they played some songs that I never heard them play live including

Nirvana
Electric Ocean
King Country Man
Wonderland
Star(Acoustic)

Anyway, it was an awesome show. Also, I caught a drum stick. I just missed out on one of Ian's tambourines during the Sonic Temple tour back in the days... So finally got a souvenir.

Just wanted to let you know about the DVD and the show.

Went to my 4th Cult show, and this by far was the best. Always a great NYC turnout for the Cult. Ian really feeds off the NYC energy. The show itself was phenomenal being that it was at Irving Plaza. Being right up against Billy was amazing. The setlist for this show and the earlier Nokia show was just phenomenal. Show started off with Lil Devil and then into Sweet Soul Sister which just rocks live. Lots of great stage banter, with Ian trashing Hartford and telling us how fortunate we are to be in NYC. Can’t wait for the DVD to come out. Biggest surprise of the night was King Contrary Man which just smoked. Ian stated that they were the first one in and they will be the last ones out. I have to say I can’t argue with him there. You simply cant find many bands better than the Cult.

Just saw The Cult last night at Irving Plaza. It was the third time I've seen them and it was the highlight of them all. I got there early to see if on the off chance I might meet one of the guys. Unbelievably, I'd been waiting only 10 minutes when Ian showed up. I had my Instant Live CD from the Nokia show in New York last March and he was kind enough to sign it for me as well as pose for a picture. We chatted for a couple of minutes before he was on his way. He is truly a class act.

The Bangkok 5... well everybody has to start somewhere and I've definitely seen way worse opening acts.

But let's talk about The Cult. It was a really high energy show and the band was tight. I debated between going down to the front row as I had previously done at the last 2 shows without incident (I'm 5'1), or check out the show from the balcony. I chose the balcony which saved me from being flattened by the mosh pit that formed early on in this show. It was nice to see good crowd energy but I'm too old (and too small) to be a part of that anymore. You could tell that Ian and Billy were feeding off that energy. I loved hearing favorites like Rain, Spiritwalker and She Sells Sanctuary. Billy joked at one point about having gone to see Guns-n-Roses a couple of night earlier and the whole concept of arena rock just before they launched into "one from that era", Fire Woman. The next highlight of my night (and I thought it couldn't get better than meeting Ian!) was when they played Nirvana as an encore. I was ecstatic. I had been hoping that they would play that. I hope that the next time I see them, they'll play Sun King and My Bridges Burn.

Here's to new Cult music in 2007.

The rain followed me from Flariduh to Philly and now here to NYC's Irving Plaza. Luckily it was an indoor venue, and luckily there was a metal awning to stand under while waiting three hours for the doors to open in rainy, windy, 60 degree fahrenheit weather. During said wait, I was interviewed by one of the camera men filming the show, and it may be used on the DVD. They asked how long I've been into The Cult, and what songs I hoped they'd play tonight- I immediately said 'Coming Down (Drug Tongue)'. It's probably a lost cause however, because they still haven't played that one since 1995. Once inside I made my way to front and centre still again, right in front of another cameraman, and I had to endure another set by Bangkok Five before the Cult started. I can quite honestly say though, that this performance sucked the least out of the six times I've now seen these guys. Their music was kind of starting to grow on me, but the singer is one of the most talentless, obnoxious twats ever to grace the stage.

I didn't understand the short film which was shown before the Cult's set, nor did I understand what it had to do with The Cult themselves. I was not, however, one of the idiots shouting inane comments back at the film.

The Cult's set was good, but again Ian's mic again was too low. Maybe this was done intentionally for the dvd shoot? Billy and the rest of the band sounded good. Ian started the show wearing a fur hat similar to what he wore on the cover of the Electric album, which he threw to the side after the first few songs. Spiritwalker, Electric Ocean, Rise, and the songs from Love probably got the crowd going more than others.

I ended up with about two thirds of another of Ian's tambourines, and at the end of the show, John walked to the end of the stage and handed me a signed drum head.

Six Cult "Tribal Gatherings" covering 7500+ miles in two weeks, many old friends seen again and new friends made, about a half dozen guitar pics, one autographed drumhead, two tambourines, four setlist (two of them are autographed) I'm deliriously tired from lack of sleep, my head is still spinning and my ears are ringing like the f*cking Gong Show.

It's a great feeling ....................
