Austin, Texas, La Zona Rosa

Again, as I have read from previous show reviews on this tour, there was no opening band, so the people that arrived when the doors opened at 7 stood and waited for 2:20 with The CULT starting at exactly 9:20. There was a great deal of discontent in the crowd, since the tickets said doors at 7, show at 8. The band opened with more sound problems - again, likely due to no opening band to work out the kinks. So most of Lil Devil was pretty poor. After that, the band turned in a great performance. The highlight for me was the unexpected Spiritwalker that was seething with intense energy. It was awesome. The lowlight for me was the extended acoustic set - Edie (Ciao Baby) was great, but I could have done without an impromptu Star and Brother Wolf; Sister Moon. On the encore, the great surprise was Electric Ocean, which they said they are only playing on the Texas dates and haven't played live since the Electric tour. True or not, who knows? All in all, great show as always in a very small venue. Very cool.

The Sold Out show at La Zona Rosa was rock and roll at its’ finest. After making the crowd wait for almost 2 hours after the proposed start time, things were getting sketchy with the crowd booing and hissing every time the roadies came out instead of the band. They actually looped through the intro music twice, which I think was the reason the crowd was going uneasy. It was looking a little scary for the band if they did manage to surface (whispers were going through the crowd that Ian and Billy had fought, that someone had partied too much on 6th street, etc.) - but then the band came out - it was like an explosion, the whole room filled with electricity and we all rocked for the rest of the night. Ian and Billy were the most talkative and interactive I’ve ever seen and it was an absolutely perfect show, great band, great songs, and feeling like they actually paid attention to where and who they were playing to.

I have a wristband for sxsw and I don’t think anything I’ll see there will compare!
