Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre (KROQ Weenie Roast), Irvine, California

Other Festival Bands: Stabbing Westward, Crazy Town, Disturbed, Coldplay, Papa Roach, Linkin Park, 311, Staind, Blink 182, Jane's Addiction

Just watched the webcast of the KROQ Weenie Roast. The Cult were TREMENDOUS! Ian was all over the stage, singing and dancing and working every bit of it. He was totally on. During The Witch & Love Removal Machine Ian went into the crowd. Actually during Love Removal Machine he looked liked he was all the way back into the stands. When he tried to get back to the stage, something happened between him and I think a camera man or some crew person. Ian was pissed. The whole time this was going on, the band was wailing non stop. It may have been one of the best versions of Love Removal Machine I have heard. Billy was flawless, he is the master of the guitar. Amazing! Matt, Billy & Mike were clearly outstanding, tight and rocking, perfection!

WEENIE ROASTED

This year's "Weenie Roast," an annual concert sponsored by a Los Angeles radio station, provided attendees with a bit more than just a day of great music from acts like Staind, Blink-182, Disturbed, Coldplay, 311, Stabbing Westward, The Cult and Jane's Addiction...it was also the site of a couple of brawls involving musicians!

Things began to heat up during The Cult's set. Ian Astbury, apparently upset at his band going on at 4:40 pm (before newer artists like Coldplay, Papa Roach and Linkin Park, to name a few), sneered at one point to the two-thirds-full Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre crowd, "I'm glad you could make it to see us...I guess we're not big rock stars, like Perry Farrell." As The Cult launched into their closing song, Love Removal Machine, Astbury was a dervish of activity, running all around the seating area of the amphitheater as security and cameramen frantically tried to keep pace. Upon finally returning to the stage, the singer was confronted by an event staffer wearing a headset. Astbury apparently didn't like what was said, so he pushed the staffer, who attempted to grab the vocalist? which caused a Cult roadie to run out and toss the beleaguered staffer off the stage. Then, as the song wound down, Astbury commenced heaving the mic stand and several monitors off the stage (which fortunately was a revolving one and didn't affect the start time of Coldplay, the next act), also trashing some of Matt Sorum's drum kit.

After Astbury's antics, things calmed down for awhile, as the well-behaved audience enjoyed sterling sets of music from Coldplay, Papa Roach, Linkin Park, 311 and Staind.
