Obras Sanitaruis, Buenos Aires, Argentina
Opening Band: La Mancha de Rolando
THE CULT came to Buenos Aires for the third time. The first two were after
releasing Ceremony and The Cult albums. This time was quite strange since
the new album is not yet finished so we were really surprised when we knew
that they were coming. It was the best concert I've ever seen, much better
than the previous ones and with a lot of energy. There was only one concert
so it was absolutely sold out. Obras Sanitarias is a basketball satadium.
There were 6.000 people more or less although the price of the tickets
were quite expensive, from $20 to $50. Matt Sorum introduced to the
audience the opening band, which is a new rock & roll band called
"La Mancha de Rolando". When they finished, the crowd got really anxious,
but we had to wait at least half an hour more. I was on the field and it
was really crowded, so all the people were singing soccer fan's songs in
which they substituted the words 'the cult' for the name of their teams.
Finally when the lights turned off and the band showed up, the crowd got
really wild, we started shouting when Ian Astbury appeared wearing a hood
covering her head. The Cult's Classics Removal Machine started. They began
with a non-stop marathon of hits. The opening song was Lil' Devil
and the crowd got much wilder than they were, it was a mass moving from
one side to another without pause. They continued with Sun King,
Sweet Soul Sister, Peace Dog, Edie (Ciao Baby) and
Rain, one after another without interruption. In the first song
when Ian took off the hood, some people realized that he was almost bald.
He was also very active, jumping, throwing his mic and his tambourine
and asking the crowd for more action. He seemed to be very happy with the
response of the audience. South American audiences are usually very hot and
wild!!!!! After Rain they followed with Painted On My Heart,
which sounded so damn good.
Then Ian said he didn't speak Sapanish so he asked the rhythm guitar player,
to introduce the brand new song which I did not know but was really hard.
As most people didn't know that song they got quiet to rest a little but
Ian didn't allow us to. Then The Witch, Fire Woman, once
again people got wild. In The Clouds and then Ian announced the
last song which was the first climax She Sells Sanctuary, which was
played really fast. They left us for five minutes and when they came back Ian
appeared with his face painted red and black, and his right hand was also
painted black. He said in Spanish "Mano Negra" which means Black Hand. Then
They played The Phoenix, and the audience begged for Revolution
but they didn't play it. They finished with Love Removal Machine,
which was the second climax of the night. In the last part of the song Ian
jumped from the stage into the crowd where all the people took him and didn't
allow him to come back, so the band continued playing until he got back to
end the song. He didn't get enough cause he climbed and stood on the amplifiers.
As regards the new bass player and the rhythm guitar player they played really
good. Billy Duffy played his guitar really wild and his solos were played
fanstastically, but didn't say anything, he was only concentrated on his
guitar. Matt also did an excellent job , he 's an animal playing the drums. A
very good show, it's a share that they only played one night but we surely
enjoyed it. We are already looking forward for a new visit after the release
of the new album!!!!! From Buenos Aires

Woooooooooow!!!!!!!!!!!! I saw The Cult yesterday!!!!!! Amaziiiiiinggggggg!!!!!!!
Ian has shaved his head. Is very wear seeing him like that. The band was in a good
mood (good humor). Ian entered with boxing clothes (like Bono), with his
head undercover. They started with Lilī Devil. Then Sun King,
Sweet Soul Sister, Peace Dog, Edie (Ciao Baby), Rain
(amazing), Painted On My Heart, The Witch, a new song (heavy rock)),
Fire Woman, The Phoenix, - a small break - Be Free,
She Sells Sanctuary and they finished with Love Removal Machine.
After the break, Ian entered with his face painted like a cat. He was so excited
that he through himself into the public (diving?, I donīt know how to explain it).
So everyone there could touch him. Then he was rescued by the security people.
But the thing is that I touched Ian!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (a dream came true). What
can I say, A the end Ian said: "See you next year Buenos Aires", so I hope for
their return. The show was in OBRAS SANITARIAS. Tha stadium was full, full,
full. Byeeeeeee (sorry for my english)

I was lucky to be living in Buenos Aires as I had the chance to see the Cult
performing for the first time in South America in five years. I arrived at the
concert about two hours early to assure a good place in front of the stage but had
to suffer through the opening band Mancha de Rolando which was totally crap but seemed
to have a quite a steady local fan base consisting of mainly prepubecent boys and
girls. After a prolonged delay between sets, the lights dimed and the opening
music started....Ian strolled on stage wearing a black oversized jumpsuit made of a
kind of parachute-type fabric complete with large hood over his eyes. I didn't realize
it at first until the Argentine crowd started shouting "Rodrigo, Rodrigo" but it seems
Ian was clearly mocking another crap local argentine artist who recently died in a
drunk driving accident here earlier this year. Ian even managed to get spit on with a
huge spit bomb during the second song which did not impress him at all. Billy was
complete with short-cropped blond hair and light-blue wraparound sunglasses. The rest
of the stage was completed with Matt Sorum, Chris Wyse on bass and Michael Dimkich on
rhythm guitar. The band played the following songs (and I apologize in advance if I
missed one because of all the excitement and stuff): Lil' Devil, Sun King,
Sweet Soul Sister, Peace Dog, Edie (Ciao Baby), Rain,
Painted On My Heart, a new song that was announced as a "new song": From the
words it could be titled "5000" or "Don't want to be myself" or "Starcrazy". Very
good, very heavy, a bit Stone Temple Pilot-ish, but that can be forgiven since the
Cult probably inspired most of the Pilots stuff anyway, The Witch, Firewoman,
In The Clouds, Wild Flower, She Sells Sanctuary Encore: The
Phoenix, Love Removal Machine. Both Ian and Billy said they would be back
here next year, so that probably means they are planning a tour following the release
of the new album

When I arrived, the opening band was in about the middle of their set.
The Cult was expected to be on stage at 22:00hs. The usual intro sounds
started at 22:35 and just after that the second guitar player (?), the bassist
(?) and Matt Sorum (drums) came up into the stage. Finally Billy followed by
Ian entered the stage and saluted the crowd (the place was full of people).
Ian was with his head totally rasurated (what happened to your hair man?) and
wearing black jeans and a rain jacket. Billy was wearing his emblematic and
marvelous Gibson LesPaul (the beige one. Who cares about the his clothes?).
They quickly started to play Lil' Devil and we started to jump and sing and
rock!
I have to say that the quality and power of sound was nothing but fucking
perfect!. Everything sounded incredibly clear and powerful. So did Ian's
intact throat. So did Billy's celestial guitars (all of the four he played).
So did Matt's demolition drums. So did everything being played up there.
The set-list was based totally in the first albums. Almost all songs were from
Love, Electric and Sonic Temple albums. Nothing from Ceremony nor The Cult
albums.
While playing the last song (Love Removal Machine) Ian said "till next year"
(so please give us more Cult next year boys!), and in the final killing
rocking part of the song he dived into the crowd. I could hardly beliieve my
eyes! After a few seconds Ian came back to the stage, he was barely naked!
people took his shirt and shoes off and he had to raise his jeans once back on
the stage! The show was about 80 minutes long.
In a few words: One of the most fucking great shows I've ever been in.
The following set-list was made with all the songs I could remember they
played. Two new songs unkown to me appear as "new song". So this is not
official and the order of songs may not be correct except for the opening and
final songs of each of the two sets (main and encore).

The show they did on Friday in Obras was amazing, i was a bit surprised because
the shows they did in 1995 were a bit too soft and they play a lot of their last
album (well they were promoting that album), and it was too short too, like 1:10
min. and i was afraid that they were going to play that kind of show again. The
show they did on friday it was awesome, the started with Lil' Devil, they
continue with Sun King, and they play straight rock'n'roll songs, including:
Sweet Soul Sister, Peace Dog, Fire Woman, The Witch,
Rain, Edie (Ciao Baby), Painted On My Heart, In The Clouds,
a brand new song that was amazing (it sounds like Stone Temple Pilots), Wild
Flower, The Phoenix, She Sells Sanctuary, and they closed with
Love Removal Machine. Like i said before, they seemed very happy with the
audience, and they play like nearly 2 hours (1:40 aprox), in the begininig Ian
went out in a black suite, like a boxer suit (I don't know the word in english!!)
with his head cover, and when billy hit Lil' Devil riff he shows his bald
hair (he cut all of his hair!!), the whole show was very rocker and passing the
middle of the show Ian painted wis face with orange and black paint, like an indian
warrior and went completely crazy, like the audience who was crazy too, and began
to dance like in an indian ritual (like Jim!!), it was amazing, and in the final
song, (Love Removal Machine) he throw himself to the audience. Billy was
very happy too, i never saw billy that happy so I guess they were really enjoing
the show. Well, i think thats all, so like ian always said, "hasta la victoria".

This was the 3rd time The Cult came to Buenos Aires, The first time was in 1991
with the Ceremonial Tour, the played on River Football Stadium (50,000 capacity),
in 1995 (two shows in Obras Stadium 7000 capacity) and this time to Obras Stadium
too. This was the best show at all, it was great, Ian was in his fucking day, and
Billy played incredible. It was a 90 minute show, they played 15 songs, not in order:
Lil' Devil, Sun King, Peace Dog, Sweet Soul Sister,
Edie (Ciao Baby), The Witch, In The Clouds, Painted On My
Heart, A new one(I donīt know itīs name), Love Removal Machine, Wild
Flower, The Phoenix, Rain, Fire Woman and She Sells
Sanctuary. At the end, Ian shout "See you next year" . Isn't that great? That's
all, I hope you can see them Live soon, Bye Bye

Just a couple of notes about this show.
The set list also included Wild Flower, and they didn't play Be Free. I
think Alejo is mistaking it for In The Clouds.
The new song was great and Painted On My Heart played live has much more
energy.
Billy was in a better mood than the night before, he smiled, waved and came
to the very edge of the stage to get closer to the ones who were at the
front.
It was insane being at the front but according to Ian at one point it seemed
that we were a little asleep, he must have been joking because we didn't
rest for a minute.
The only "complaint" I have is that they played for only 1 hour and 20', i
think that for a band with 6 full albums, they should play longer. I was
expecting for Zap City, Horse Nation, Spiritwalker (songs
they did play last August) and more new songs.
Also, the photos I took didn't come out well.
They promised to return next year, hope so!

One of the most fucking great shows I've ever been in. I went to the first show
they give here in Buenos Aires, but I couldn't enjoy it very well because I was
with fever and it was raining... But this one was amazing... When the show finished
I found me walking out of the stadium with a big smile in my face and thinking: "man
this was amazing..." and when I raise my eyes I saw all the people there had the
same BIG smile in their faces... So you can imagine how was the show
Fernanado Naccarato - rdantones@yahoo.com
